7 sex trends you should know about in 2023

By Maya Khamala

Chances are you made a few personal or professional resolutions in the lead-up to 2023, but have you given any thoughts to setting intentions for your sex life this year?

To kick off the new year right, sexual wellness experts have identified the sex trends they foresee taking up space in 2023. Whether you’d like to measure the proximity of your own sexual resolutions against those at the pulse of our collective now, or you could use a little inspiration for your own naughty journey, this list’s for you: 7 saucy sex trends worthy of your consideration—or at least a moment of your undivided attention.

1. Experimenting with natural sexual health & wellness products.

There’s no denying that sex toys are fantastic for 7 million reasons and counting, but there are other, research-backed dimensions of sexual excellence that can change your bedroom experience as well. Take the exciting trend that is holistic sexual wellness products. From marijuana suppositories for period cramps, to CBD oil for anxiety, pain, and erectile dysfunction (to name a few), cbd-infused lube, to cannabis as an aphrodisiac (are you detecting a trend?), the possibilities are endless—and decidedly green. And then there’s the growing body of natural supplements designed to prevent UTIs and yeast infections. There has possibly never been a better time to be on the market for all-natural sexual health and wellness aids.

2. Having vaginal orgasms.

There once was a time when g-spot and vaginal orgasms didn’t get as much airtime as clitoral orgasms, but, as sex coach Mangala Holland explains, women are wanting to invest their time in exploring new and different sensations. Despite the fact that any kind of orgasm hierarchy has been repeatedly shown false, and the fact that feeling pressure to climax in any way other than the one that calls you (if at all) is entirely missing the point, Holland draws attention to “a growing number of women who are successful in many parts of their lives and are no longer prepared to settle for average pleasure or orgasms.” With more g-spot vibes coming onto the market, as well as glass dildos that are lovingly designed for g-spot pleasure, there are myriad ways to explore internal orgasms more, um, deeply.

3. Introducing sex toys to partnered pleasure.

While many of us associate the use of vibrators, dildos, and other sex toys with masturbation, AKA solo lovin’, this just in: sex toys can also be used as an instrument of partnered sexploration! Especially eco-friendly ones, which are constantly rising in popularity. Sexpert Polly Rodriguez predicts a further emergence of toys designed especially for couples in 2023. “This could be anything from BDSM accessories to vibrators,” she explains, “but ultimately, [the focus will be] on products that encourage continued exploration with a partner.” After all, toys can add a whole new dimension to your relationship and make your bond that much stronger. Bonus counter-tip: you can masturbate (alone) to your heart’s content, even if you’re in a relationship, thereby self-actualizing your inner sex goddess and bettering your partnered sex-life simultaneously. Gasp.

4. Exploring ASMR.

As countless ASMR videos and audio recordings across diverse platforms show, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response has become something of a global sensation. If you’re among those who do, in fact, experience ASMR, something about the sounds or visuals in ASMR clips tend to calm you and make your senses tingle all at once. Whether it’s whispering, crackling, tapping, or scratching, blowing, a ticking clock, or the clickety-clack of high heels on pavement, there is some evidence that these unique sensory experiences can help people sleep better as well as enhance the sexual experience.

5. Trying anal on him.

With the enthusiastic consent of all involved, adding anal to your repertoire can open untold worlds of bliss. While the pleasure potential of anal for (straight) men is still often overlooked, this is changing in 2023. The fact is, maannnnyy non-gay men love anal stimulation—even if it hasn’t come up yet. If your guy has expressed a desire to go there, you might consider trying “prostate milking.” Some trans women call the prostate their G-spot, and it is also called the P-spot. When stimulated properly, it can seriously deepen and intensify your partner’s orgasm—there are almost as many nerve endings in the prostate as there are in the clitoris. You can stimulate the prostate in a variety of ways: with your finger(s), a sex toy, or via pegging, baby.

6. Welcoming smart sex tech.

Stat of the day: 36% of people would be curious enough to try sex with a robot. Unsurprisingly, cybersex and virtual sexperiences gained significant traction during the pandemic. Now that we’re (sorta kinda) on the other side of Covid, people want the best of both worlds—real and virtual alike. Sex toys have been getting smarter for some time now. While some offer app-connectivity and are usb-rechargeable, others are decked out with heat-function, and still others can adapt their vibration patterns to music. The main reason respondents give for wanting to use app-controlled sex toys, is to “spice things up in the bedroom.” (79%), while fostering closeness in long-distance relationships comes in second, at a distant 26%. Bottom line: smart and connected sex toys are on the rise!

7. Choosing non-traditional relationship structures.

A recent YouGov poll of 1300+ adults in the US found that 32% felt their ideal relationship was non-monogamous—to some degree. In addition to a growing number of polyamorous relationships, full-on throuples (3-person relationships) are also becoming more of a thing! According to sex journalist Abby Moss, “Ethical non-monogamy is becoming more widely talked about than ever before and while alternative relationship styles aren’t for everyone, this broadening of the conversation is helping to create a better understanding of what relationships can be: and what sex can be.” The trick, of course, is knowing your reasons, your boundaries, and championing communication at every turn.

Happy 2023 to all—may you embody your truest pleasure this year and well beyond! One love. <3
